Mayflower II

While in Plymouth we visited the Mayflower II. It is a replica of the Mayflower docked in Plymouth for visitors to learn about what it was like for the passengers to travel from England to America on the original Mayflower. There are even costumed role players who will discuss the journey with you.

102 people were aboard the Mayflower II. When you look at the picture above it is really hard to imagine that many people on board. It must have been so cramped on the journey.

We had a chat with one of the role players below deck. She told us that there were 20 children on board the Mayflower. I can’t imagine what living in such a confined space throughout the journey must have been like for little kids. There would have been no room to play or run around. The role player even told us that there was one baby born on board! Imagine giving birth in such conditions!
