Coney Island

Recently we headed to Coney Island for the day. The Coney Island Sandcastle Competition was on, so it seemed like the perfect time to go and enjoy the beach on a bright warm summer day before the weather starts getting too cool to make it worthwhile.

Tate was very excited about heading to the beach and wanted to make sandcastles of his own! Knox had never really experienced the beach before – last time we went to Coney Island he wasn’t even 2 months old! Knox enjoyed the water but Tate really didn’t want to get his feet wet. That was a shame because he loved the beach back home.

After collecting some water in the kids buckets we headed up the beach onto the sand to make sandcastles. Both Tate and Knox had lots of fun doing this. Knox wasn’t too concerned if ‘perfect’ sandcastle sand made it in to the buckets. He just loved throwing the sand in!

When Tate and Knox were finished with their sandcastle making it was time to check out everyone else’s. Despite being later in the afternoon, we were surprised to see a lot of mounds of sand yet to be made into works of art. However, the professional sand castle makers were already hard at work on their creations.

Next up was the Coney Island Aquarium. Although quite small by any aquarium standards, the kids still enjoyed looking at the fish. I must say though, it surprises me that a city like New York has such a tiny aquarium that fails to live up to the standards of any other aquarium I’ve been too.
