Our last stop for our second day in the Poconos was to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. The train ride starts in the town of Jim Thorpe. The town was originally called Mauch Chunk but had its name changed to Jim Thorpe after the famous athlete died. Jim Thorpe is quite a pretty old town with winding streets and old buildings.
The train ride is a 16 mile round trip, riding the the former mainline of the Jersey Central Lines leaving Jim Thorpe. The line swings onto the former Lehigh Valley main line before passing Glen Onoko. The train follows the Lehigh River until it reaches Old Penn Haven before stopping and heading back the same way to Jim Thorpe.
The train had both open air cars and normal closed cars. We chose to ride in the open air one so that we could enjoy the fresh air (it was a very humid day!) but also so that we could stick our heads out and enjoy the scenery a little more!
Both Tate and Knox really enjoyed the train ride and looking out of the windows at the scenery. That is, until it started raining towards the very end!!!!
Uncle Roger would have enjoyed hearing about this.
Oh yes, I’m sure he would.
